OceanSaver to Supply BW Gas LNG Carriers with BWT System

OceanSaver’s ballast water treatment (BWT) system has been chosen for two 162,000 cbm LNG carriers being built by BW Gas.

OceanSaver was selected due to its competitive pricing, low operating costs, and compatible technical system.

BW Gas is one of the largest independent owners and operators of LNG carriers and the largest owner and operator of LPG carriers. These sophisticated and highly regulated vessels require competent crews and high quality operations. They also require consistent standards of maintenance which BW Gas maintains regardless of short-term changes in the freight market. With these standards in mind, BW Gas conducted a thorough evaluation of the OceanSaver ballast water system (BWT) before confirmation.

BW Gas has the following prerequisites for a ballast water treatment system: reliability, high quality manufacturing, and materials that meet the heavy-duty operational demands of shipping. The OceanSaver BWT unit is made up of only high-performance components. The proven OceanSaver Mark II technology provides for exceptionally low-maintenance and failure-free filtration. Spare parts are minimized in favor of efficient performance and economic efficiency.

The need for a system that could operate optimally anywhere in the world was also a consideration. BW Gas chose a BWT system that has been specifically designed to provide ship operators with an effective, fully compliant solution for global trade in various water quality and salinity conditions. The Mark II technology provides highly efficient water transfer during operationally critical ballast applications.

OceanSaver’s Mark II system disinfects filtered ballast water using the onboard generation of oxidants delivered to the ballast flow via side stream injection from OceanSaver’s C2E sea water activation module. This unique technology provides a mixture of oxidants with very rapid action and a very short half-life. When injected into the ballast water, they are able to eliminate the unwanted organisms. The process only requires a very small dosage of oxidants compared to conventional electrolysis or oxidising disinfectants. The amount of residual oxidant (TRO) is also greatly reduced within a few hours and neutralisation during de-ballasting is rarely required.

OceanSaver’s Mark II system has received DNV type approval and has further undergone DNV’s approval program for installation and safety standards. “The system offers ship operators uninterrupted flow, continuous operation, high filtration efficiency, robust quality and long life at a very competitive price,” says Houtan Houshangi, CEO, OceanSaver. “In the past 24 months we have upgraded our BWT units and these improvements have reduced unit prices by 30 percent.”

BW Ventures sits under the BW group, leveraging this legacy by bringing economical and environment friendly technology solutions to the maritime community. BW Ventures came onboard as part-owner of OceanSaver in 2011, after recognising the strong market potential of the system. OceanSaver currently has 50 BWT systems on order and seven systems in operation worldwide. Since OceanSaver systems are specifically designed to meet the requirements of each individual vessel, the company works in partnership with shipowners and yards from the initial testing and engineering phases, through to installation, commissioning, and service.
