Técnicas Reunidas completes FEED work for Pembina and Marubeni’s hydrogen/ammonia plant

Business Developments & Projects

Spanish EPC contractor Técnicas Reunidas has completed the engineering design for the hydrogen and blue ammonia plant co-developed by Canada’s Pembina Pipeline Corporation and Japan’s Marubeni Corporation in Alberta, Canada.

Under the contract awarded last year, Técnicas Reunidas carried out the preliminary design of an industrial-scale facility dedicated to hydrogen and blue ammonia production with CO2 sequestration.

The design includes the application of advanced technological solutions and leading geological initiatives to increase the contribution of the plant to decarbonization goals, the company said.

The plant would be installed on Pembina-owned lands adjacent to its Redwater Fractionation Complex in the Alberta Industrial Heartland near Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, Canada. It could generate up to one million tons per year of blue ammonia for Japan and other Asian markets.

To remind, Pembina and Marubeni revealed plans for the low-carbon hydrogen and ammonia production facility in May 2023 as part of the joint project to develop a low-carbon ammonia supply chain from Western Canada to Japan and other Asian markets.

At the time, the project partners stated that initial feasibility studies had been completed. A potential final investment decision (FID) is expected in the second half of 2025, targeting the commencement of operations in 2028.
