Ohmium inks 343MW green hydrogen deal for ammonia production in Mexico

Business Developments & Projects

PEM electrolyzers manufacturer Ohmium International has signed an agreement to provide 343 MW of green hydrogen electrolyzer to Tarafert, the developer of large-scale urea fertilizer and green ammonia production facility in Mexico.

Under the agreement, Ohmium will deliver electrolyzer over three tranches, with the first 69 MW to be delivered in 2025 on schedule for Tarafert’s project completion.

The green hydrogen produced with solar power will be utilised to produce up to 200,000 metric tonnes of ammonia per year.

“Utilizing green hydrogen to produce ammonia is a major advantage for our project. Green hydrogen means our ammonia will no longer be subject to the volatile price spikes and pollution inherent in fossil fuel use”, said Jean Perarnaud, CEO of Tarafert.

According to Arne Ballantine, CEO of Ohmium International, green hydrogen can reduce carbon emissions related to the ammonia production process to zero.

Last month, Ohmium entered into an agreement with Spanish energy company Cepsa to develop green hydrogen projects in the Iberian Peninsula.

The companies will collaborate to develop and build initially small-scale projects aiming to develop a green hydrogen platform using Ohmium’s modular PEM electrolyzer.
