Yamal LNG’s first cargo lands at Grain LNG terminal

The first cargo shipped from Novatek’s Yamal LNG facility has reached the shores of the United Kingdom, docking at the Grain LNG terminal in Kent. 

According to the vessel tracking data by the marine data provider, VesselsValue, the 172,600-cbm LNG tanker Christophe de Margerie is docked at the National Grid’s 15 million tons of LNG per year terminal.

The first cargo from the Arctic LNG facility was sold to Petronas LNG UK Limited, a UK-based LNG unit of Malaysian energy giant Petronas.

RT, the state-funded Russian television network, reports that the United Kingdom resorted to importing Russian LNG due to gas shortages and low temperatures that have been some 15°C below the average low temperatures for December.

However, citing National Grid’s spokesperson, Russian news agency TASS, reports that the volumes unloaded at the terminal will not be pumped into the National Grid UK transmission network.

Novatek said in its statement following the cargo’s departure from the Arctic facility that LNG sales under Yamal LNG’s long-term contracts will start in April 2018.

The three-train Yamal LNG plant, designed to produce about 16.5 million tonnes per year, will ramp up the production from its first liquefaction train to 5.5 mtpa gradually. Other two trains are expected to come onstream in 2018 and 2019.
