Ferguson Marine launches first Scottish LNG ferry

UK-based shipbuilder Ferguson Marine Engineering launched the MV Glen Sannox at its Port Glasgow shipyard, the first LNG-fueled ferry designed and built in the UK.

This MV Glen Sannox is the first of two vehicle passenger ferries being built by Ferguson Marine Engineering.

Construction on the 102-meter ferry started in 2016 with delivery to the customer, Caledonian Maritime Assets Limited (CMAL), scheduled to take place in the winter of 2018/19, Ferguson Marine Engineering said in a statement.

MV Glen Sannox which is planned to be operated on the Ardrossan to Brodick route will be able to transport up to 1,000 passengers and up to 127 cars.

The launching of the vessels is a significant milestone for the shipyard that was brought out of administration in 2014 by Clyde Blowers Capital.

Speaking of the cooperation between FMEL and CMAL, Jim McColl, founder, chairman and CEO of Clyde Blowers Capital said, “the experience and knowledge gained during this project will be of enormous benefit to the competitiveness of Scottish shipbuilding in the future as technology continues to develop to meet tightening clean energy legislation.”
