Hyundai Samho orders GTT LNG tank design for CMA CGM containerships

Korean shipyard Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries (HSHI) has ordered the design of the cryogenic fuel tanks of six new LNG-fuelled container vessels from French LNG containment specialist GTT.

On 25 July, GTT announces that it received, in the second quarter of 2022, an order from its partner Hyundai Samho to design the tanks for LNG-fuelled container vessels, on behalf of the French shipping and logistics major CMA CGM.

These vessels, each capable of carrying 8,000 containers, will be equipped with an LNG fuel tank with a capacity of 6,000 cubic metres. Each LNG fuel tank will feature the Mark III Flex membrane containment technology.

The shipyard will be delivering the vessels from the fourth quarter of 2024 to the fourth quarter of 2025.

This order brings the total number of container vessels equipped, or to be equipped, with GTT technology to 80.

CMA CGM revealed this order last month as its first order for methanol-powered vessels in an effort to become carbon neutral by 2050. The order is specifically for a total of six 15,000 TEU dual-fuel methanol-powered containerships.
