Siemens Gamesa Breaks Ground on Taiwanese Nacelle Assembly Plant

Ports & Logistics

Siemens Gamesa has held a groundbreaking ceremony for a nacelle assembly facility in the Port of Taichung in Taiwan.

Construction is due to begin in 2020 and the nacelle assembly facility is expected to be operational in 2021.

The parcel of land being developed in Taiwan measures over 30,000 square metres and will be used for nacelle assembly, testing, warehousing, office buildings, and outdoor storage. Siemens Gamesa is also working with Taiwan International Ports Corporation (TIPC) to establish inbound and outbound logistics in newly-established quaysides nearby.

The groundbreaking ceremony was attended, among others, by the representatives from Ørsted, the developer of the 900MW Changhua 1 & 2a wind farms which will feature the Asia-Pacific variant of the Siemens Gamesa 8.0-167 DD wind turbine and which the new facility will support.

The same turbine model will be used on the 640MW Yunlin offshore wind farm. The turbine maker has also secured a conditional order of its 8MW model for the 376MW Formosa 2 offshore wind farm.

Back in December 2017, Siemens Gamesa announced plans to establish a manufacturing and pre-assembly site at the Port of Taichung.

“Our strategic investment in Taichung harbor with this nacelle assembly facility continues as previously communicated. Doing so ahead of the local content requirement timeframe demonstrates our confidence in the long-term potential of offshore wind power for Taiwan and other APAC markets. The strong foothold we are building here will enable us to better meet our customers’ needs in this market and in other parts of the region,” said Andreas Nauen, CEO of the Offshore Business Unit in SGRE.
