GEV kicks off zero-carbon hydrogen export study

Australian energy company Global Energy Ventures (GEV) has started the hydrogen export study after appointing three consultants to evaluate the export of green hydrogen using compressed hydrogen shipping technology.

As disclosed, the objective of the HyExport study is to demonstrate the technical feasibility and commercial advantages of GEV’s compressed hydrogen shipping solution.

The company signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Province Resources and Total Eren to study the feasibility of green hydrogen exports from Western Australia in August this year.

Engineering firm WSP has been appointed as project lead, and will be responsible for technical and commercial assessment. Environmental specialist ERM will focus on defining risks, constraints, and the path to environmental approvals, while maritime consultant Oropesa will manage the offshore terminal design and Gascoyne shipping operations.

The scope will include the integration of the project’s proposed green hydrogen production facility with an onshore compression facility and offshore mooring and loading system, as well as the operation of a fleet of CH-2 ships for transport to nominated markets in the Asia-Pacific region.

Recently, the Australian firm received approval in principle (AiP) from classification society American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) for its compressed hydrogen ship with a 430-tonne capacity.

GEV revealed the design of a new compressed hydrogen ship (H2 Ship) tailored for the transport of zero-carbon energy late last year.

The approval and the accompanying road map to construction approval has “materially de-risked the path forward to a construction-ready milestone”, GEV revealed.
