Upstate business community in favor of LNG

Buffalo Niagara Partnership and Unshackle Upstate, said they will be submitting formal comments to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation in support of new regulations to allow the construction and operation of liquefied natural gas facilities in New York State.

The new proposed DEC regulations would permit qualified facilities to store up to 70,000 gallons of LNG, meeting the storage requirements of most LNG truck fueling stations.

“As transportation companies, delivery services and additional private sector companies transition their fleets to LNG, the state’s economy and environment will benefit by investing in LNG infrastructure. We are pleased that DEC is moving forward to put these regulations in place, and we support the construction and operation of LNG facilities in New York,” said Greg Biryla, director of development for Unshackle Upstate.

Dottie Gallagher-Cohen, President & CEO of the Buffalo Niagara Partnership said that permitting the storage and transportation of liquefied natural gas in New York State has been a top item on the partnership’s advocacy agenda for the past three years.

“The dispensing and storage of LNG will in turn spur the creation of thousands of jobs – from manufacturing jobs to construction and station operator jobs, as firms across New York State work to support these newly developed infrastructure needs,” added Gallagher-Cohen.

The groups also noted that moving forward with LNG infrastructure development would benefit New York State’s environment as well as its economy, resulting in fewer harmful automobile emissions like carbon monoxide, non-methane organic gas, nitrogen oxides and carbon dioxide, compared with other common vehicle fuels.
