MOL switches FSRU order at DSME

Japanese shipping major Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) has switched its order for an FSRU with the DSME into an order for a liquefied natural gas carrier.

The decision comes after the FSRU charterer, Uniper decided to cancel its plans to develop an LNG import terminal in Wilhelmshaven and turn to hydrogen instead.

The charter deal was signed in May 2020. The vessel had a planned send-out capacity of 10 billion cubic meters per year and a storage capacity of 263,000 cbm.

In its filing to the stock exchange, the South Korean shipyard, Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering said the new contract is for an extra-large LNG carrier.

The value of the contract has been revised from $368.2 million originally for the FSRU, down to $202.6 million for the LNG carrier.

DSME added that the delivery of the vessel is scheduled for October 2023.
