MAN Energy Solutions’ Two-Stroke Business marks major milestone

MAN Energy Solutions’ Two-Stroke Business has surpassed 1,000 orders for Tier III-compliant, emission-reduction technology for its portfolio of MAN B&W-branded, low-speed engines. 

Under the Tier III standard, NOx emissions must be reduced by approximately 75% when compared to Tier I engines.

The Tier III requirements apply to all new-build vessels that are 500 GT and above, with a length of at least 24 metres and sailing within an ECA.

As of January 1, 2021, they will also apply to the Baltic Sea and the North Sea.

MAN said that approximately one-quarter of the orders have been for Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) systems, with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems accounting for the remainder.

Exhaust gas recirculation prevents the formation of NOx by controlling the combustion process, while Selective Catalytic Reduction uses a catalyst and an additive to reduce the NOx generated by the combustion process.

The milestone was passed in early-January 2021 and is built upon references from the company’s portfolio of ME-B, ME-C and MC-C fuel-oil engines.

MAN Energy Solutions said that almost half of all orders have entered active service.

As such, our ability to treat a ship as a complete system gives us a clear market advantage that enables us to prioritise environmental considerations,” Bjarne Foldager, Senior Vice President and Head of Two-Stroke Business at MAN Energy Solutions, said.
