Swansea tidal lagoon design up for planning awards

The design of the proposed Swansea Bay tidal lagoon has been shortlisted in two separate categories for this year’s Planning Awards set to take place in London.

Tidal Lagoon Power, the developer behind the proposed Swansea Bay tidal lagoon scheme, has made it to the shortlist of the Infrastructure planning category.

The Swansea tidal lagoon project has also been shortlisted for an award in sustainability, with both Tidal Lagoon Power and London-based design, environment and energy consultancy LDA Design, acting as the lead designer on the Swansea tidal lagoon project.

The tidal power lagoon in Swansea will not only provide carbon-free energy but also urban regeneration, opening up an area of waterfront cut off from the public for over a century, LDA Design said.

The proposal includes a national sailing center, a new visitor center, maritime park, beach and saltwater marsh.

The £1.3 billion Swansea Bay tidal lagoon has a design life of 120 years, with an annual net power output of 400GWh.

This is enough to provide clean electricity to around 155,000 Welsh households, according to Tidal Lagoon Power.

The winners of the Planning Awards, run by Planning magazine in conjunction with PlanningResource and PlacemakingResource, will be revealed tomorrow, June 21, 2017, during ceremony in Savoy Place.
