Hendry submits tidal lagoons review

The head of an independent review of tidal lagoons in the UK, Charles Hendry, has submitted its final report to the UK government.

The report titled ‘The Role of Tidal Lagoons’ was submitted to Greg Clark, UK Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) yesterday, December 6.

The review was commissioned by the UK government back in February 2016 to assess the feasibility and practicality of tidal lagoon energy.

After reviewing the results, the UK government is expected to make a decision regarding subsidies for the proposed Swansea Bay Tidal Lagoon.

During the review, a group of independent experts led by IT Power Consulting (ITP) was hired to assess the technical aspects of the evidence provided through a call Hendry issued earlier, with the aim to identify and, where possible, address gaps in the evidence base for a wider tidal lagoon program in the UK.

The review considered whether, and in what circumstances, tidal lagoons could play a cost effective role as part of the UK energy mix, the scale of potential opportunities in the UK and internationally, as well as range of possible structures for financing tidal lagoons.
