Atlantis to hold tidal turbine naming ceremony

Business & Finance

Atlantis Resources will hold a turbine naming ceremony next week to acknowledge ‘the enormous’ contribution Calum Davidson has made to the marine power industry in Scotland.

The 1.5MW Andritz Hammerfest Hydro turbine, which is one of four being deployed on the MeyGen project, will be named ‘The Calum Davidson’ in recognition of Davidson’s role in supporting and championing the MeyGen project over the past decade.

The named turbine will be loaded for transit to the deployment site immediately after the ceremony, Atlantis informed.

Tim Cornelius, CEO of Atlantis, said: “This project would not exist without Calum. We faced many problems along the path to financial close: finance, licenses, leases, grid, and so on. Every time things seemed really bad, I would turn to Calum and he would find a way to make it work. He believes in us and what we are doing. More importantly, he believes in the future of the marine power industry that he has helped create in Scotland. He is one of the reasons why Scotland leads the world in tidal energy development.

“To be in this industry, you need to be resilient, tenacious, dedicated and determined. Combine that with humility and a heart the size of Scotland, and you have a pretty accurate description of Calum Davidson.”

Davidson is the Director of Energy and Low Carbon at Highlands and Islands Enterprise, the Scottish government’s economic and community development agency for the north and north-west of Scotland.

He is a member of the Scottish First Minister’s Energy Advisory Board, and leads a group responsible for the growth of a world leading low carbon cluster, built around marine renewable energy, wave, tidal and deep water offshore wind, according to All-Energy.
