Tratos supplies cables for Scotrenewables’ SR2000

Business & Finance

UK-based cable manufacturer, Tratos, has provided a bespoke cable solution to Scotrenewables for its SR2000 tidal testing programme at the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC).

A follow up to trials on Scotrenewables’ earlier 250 kW prototype, the SR250, conducted three years ago, the cable system integrates existing power and communications technologies into a combined solution for challenging tidal environments.

Craig Ormsby, Business Development Manager at Tratos, said: “We are pleased to supply this innovative cabling solution to Scotrenewables.

“Tidal power has enormous potential for future power and electricity generation in the UK and across the world and it is rewarding to be involved in such an innovative project.”

The armoured cable is rated at 6-10kV, with 3 cores. It is designed to maintain integrity while being moved around in harsh conditions, and includes bend restrictions to prevent damage under the sea, according to Tratos.

Scotrenewables Tidal Power’s SR2000 2MW floating tidal platform is 64 metres long and weighs around 550 tonnes.

The device is currently at EMEC awaiting deployment at Fall of Warness grid-connected test site scheduled to take place later this year.
