Ronnie Quinn, the General Manager at the Scotland Portfolio, talks about how The Crown Estate manages the seabed and works with industry and wave and tidal developers in the UK on projects including the MeyGen tidal energy project in the Pentland Firth, Scotland.

In addition to other assets in Scotland, the Crown Estate manages leasing of the seabed out to 12 nautical miles and rights to generate electricity from wind, waves, and tides, rights to manage cables and pipelines on the continental Shelf, as well as half of Scotland’s foreshore including 5,000 licensed moorings, 800 aquaculture sites, and salmon fishing rights.

The Crown Estate is an independent commercial business, created by Act of Parliament that manages £12 billion UK’s property portfolio.

The Crown Estate is working closely with both the Scottish and UK Governments to enable the transfer of its’ management duties in Scotland to Scottish Government, as recommended by the Smith Commission and reflected in the Scotland Act 2016.
