Cape Sharp Tidal targets June deployment

Business & Finance

Nova Scotia-based Cape Sharp Tidal plans to install the first tidal turbine in the Bay of Fundy at the end of June.

During the first week of June, the first of the two turbines is scheduled to depart from the Pictou Shipyard manufacturing site for a two-week journey around the province.

Cape Sharp Tidal plans to install the first 2 MW OpenHydro turbine during the first deployment opportunity window from June 24 to 27, then again every two weeks when slack tides present calm enough waters to lower the turbine to the sea floor.

The joint venture between Emera and OpenHydro has also informed that the second turbine will be deployed later this summer.

The 4 MW tidal array will be installed at the Fundy Ocean Research Centre for Energy (FORCE) site, near Parrsboro, Nova Scotia.

Aecon Group has been tasked with the fabrication of the turbines components and development of the barge that will be used to deploy turbines on the seabed.

Each turbine is 16 m in diameter and 20 m in height, with the weight of 1,000 tonnes with the rated capacity of 2 MW.
