Ocean Energy Europe backs global warming initiative

Environment

Ocean Energy Europe, among several other energy associations, has signed a position paper saying that making a commitment towards a renewable-based energy system in Europe will help limit global warming.

Moving away from the extensive use of fossil fuels by focusing on renewable energy and energy efficiency is an absolute prerequisite to stay below a 2°C temperature increase.

Technical solutions to ensure a fuel switch in electricity production, heating and cooling of buildings, industrial processes as well as transport already exist. But only a clear political commitment will ensure that these solutions are deployed fast enough.

We need a straightforward policy that reflects the fact that renewables will be at the core of the energy system in Europe. This approach should be implemented via all possible levers. From power production to heating and cooling, from divestment of fossil energy infrastructure to state-aid procedures. Furthermore, swift and decisive implementation will serve as a market development programme for Europe and demonstrate that a truly sustainable energy supply will also make our economies stronger.

We are convinced that by RE-energising the future, reaching the 2°C target is realistic. We stand ready to support policy makers in making this a reality.
