Bibby HydroMap finalizes Holyhead Deep Green survey operation

Bibby HydroMap has completed survey operations on the €30 million Deep Green tidal energy project off Holyhead, for consultant Xodus Group on behalf of developer Minesto.

According to Bibby HydroMap, the objective of the survey was to provide a detailed understanding of the seabed levels, characteristics and shallow geology of the proposed development area and associated export cable route corridor, as well as to conduct an environmental baseline study.

Bathymetric, side scan sonar and sub-bottom profiler data was acquired alongside benthic grab samples and drop down camera stills on board Bibby HydroMap’s 26 metre survey vessel Chartwell.

Deep Green tidal project, which was recently supported by EU funds with €13 mln, will see the installation of the first commercial scale 500 kW Deep Green tidal power plant planned for summer 2017.

Minesto announced plans for additional deployments in what will eventually be an array with a total capacity of 10 MW, enough to power approximately 8.000 households.

Minesto’s Deep Green technology consists of a wing, that resembles the kite, and the electricity is produced when the water current creates a hydrodynamic lift force on the wing which pushes the kite forward.

Bibby HydroMap is a UK-based company that specialises in the acquisition, interpretation and reporting of seabed and sub-seabed survey data.
