Wave for Energy: Bad weather delays ISWEC deployment

Operations & Maintenance

The deployment of the ISWEC wave energy converter off Italy has been delayed due to unsuitable weather conditions.

Italy-based Wave for Energy originally intended to install the 100 kW ISWEC device in March, off the island of Pantelleria, Sicily.

Tidal Energy Today spoke to Paolo Gherra, Project Manager at Wave for Energy, who said: “Unfortunately the weather conditions in February and March have slowed the launch of the system. We are trying to recover the lost time to be ready at the beginning of May.”

Wave for Energy, wave developer headquartered in Turin, designed and built ISWEC wave energy converter that uses a gyroscopic system to exploit wave’s slopes to produce energy.

ISWEC device is designed as a sealed hull. The system works when the hull oscillations caused by the movement of waves induce the rotation of the gyroscope platform. The rotation is then converted to electricity by the power generator.
