Omantel has announced the landing of the Asia Africa Europe-1 (AAE-1) submarine cable system in Oman, local media reported.

AAE-1 is a 25,000 km system owned by a consortium of 19 global service providers that will connect Southeast Asia to Europe across Egypt.

The cable connects Hong Kong, Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Myanmar, India, Pakistan, Oman, UAE, Qatar, Yemen, Djibouti, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Greece, Italy and France.

Talal al Maamari, CEO of Omantel was quoted in the media saying: “The AAE1 cable represents another step in enhancing our position as a truly international telecommunications player. Already over half of the international submarine cables that connect to the Arabian Gulf are connected through Omantel here in Oman. In the coming years, further extending our reach internationally is a key focus for Omantel, and a central goal of our 3.0 transformation strategy.”

Recently, TE SubCom announced the upgrade of the cable with the deployment of a large-scale wavelength equipage to the system.

The equipage will utilize TE SubCom’s 100 Gbps optical transmission equipment.
