Users of CARIS Easy View, a freeware program that allows users to view spatial data in a wide range of native vector and raster file formats, can now download a new sample dataset to use with the software.

The latest sample data is from a survey conducted by students from the Maritime Institute Willem Barentz (MIWB), which hosts the hydrography Category A course in the Netherlands, as part of an educational project.

The Spiegelplas is a manmade lake 20 kilometres southeast of Amsterdam, the Netherlands. The lake is 2,300 metres long and 1,100 metres wide, with the deepest point in the lake around 47 metres. The lake was dug out in the late 19th century for mining of the peat land giving it its distinct shape. In the 20th century it was further excavated for sand.

The data was collected using a Kongsberg EM2040C multibeam system, a Novatel GNSS-RTK with VRS corrections and a Seapath MRU and gyro in combination with SIS data acquisition software. The data was processed using the CARIS Ping-to-Chart software suite, consisting of CARIS HIPS and SIPS, CARIS BASE Editor, and CARIS S-57 Composer.

Using CARIS Easy View users can view the sample survey data, which includes a series of data files including a map of the lake, in 2-D and 3-D allowing users to analyze and manipulate the data.
