SgurrEnergy Talks Offshore Renewables with Vince Cable

SgurrEnergy met with Rt Hon Dr Vince Cable MP, secretary of state for business, innovation and skills, today to discuss the company’s role of innovation in the offshore renewable energy industry.

The meeting is part of Dr Cable’s visit to Glasgow to open the UK Government funded Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult, established to drive technology innovation and ensure maximum UK benefit in the offshore renewables industry.

Andrew Jamieson, chief executive of ORE Catapult, said: “Technology innovation will be the principle driving force in achieving the cost reductions necessary to realise the potential of the UK’s offshore renewable energy resources.

SgurrEnergy, supported by the ORE Catapult, is right at the heart of that innovation.”

SgurrEnergy’s technical director and joint founder, Ian Irvine, said: “SgurrEnergy has dedicated the last six years to the development and innovation of technology to strengthen the wind industry, with a particular interest in wind measurement and characterisation, using our Galion Lidar technology.

We are delighted to be in partnership with ORE Catapult in our drive for excellence in offshore wind, and remain committed to investigating the offshore wind environment.”

Opening the ORE Catapult offices today, Dr Vince Cable MP said: “We are already, in the UK, the world leader in offshore wind, with more capacity than any other country in the world and, of course, lessons have been learned around that.”

Britain has the opportunity to be the world leader, bar none, in offshore renewable technology and I think this is a tremendous thing to be able to aim for.”
