Heerema’s giant crane vessel set for maiden voyage

Heerema Marine Contractors’ giant semi-submersible crane vessel Sleipnir is set to embark upon its maiden voyage from Singapore.

The Sleipnir, which in June passed its sea trials with flying colors, is set to leave Singapore where it was recently built and delivered by Sembcorp Marine

According to the owner, it will take about 45 days for the world’s largest semi-submersible crane vessel (SSCV) to reach Spain, where it will be prepared for its first installation project in the Mediterranean.

Sleipnir is designed to work on large offshore projects such as installing and removing jackets, topsides, deep-water foundations, moorings and other offshore structures, such as wind turbines.

“This unique vessel is the largest crane vessel yet built. It has the strongest pair of revolving cranes and also is the world’s first crane vessel with dual-fuel engines running on MGO and LNG, dramatically reducing harmful emissions,” HMC said.

The Sleipnir – named after Norse god Odin’s eight-legged horse –  is the largest vessel of its type ever constructed, having a deck area of 220 meters by 102 meters.

The Sleipnir is equipped with two 10,000-tonne revolving cranes which can lift loads of up to 20,000 tonnes in tandem. During the recent sea trials, the cranes managed to lift loads of 11,000 tonnes per crane (110% of its capacity).

Heerema Marine Contractors has already won contracts to deploy the SSCV on several offshore projects including the Leviathan topsides installation in the Mediterranean Sea; Tyra jackets and topsides installation and removal in the Danish North Sea; Brae B jackets and topsides removal in the UK North Sea; as well as transportation and installation of the Hollandse Kust Zuid (HKZ) Alpha HVAC platform in the North Sea, off the Dutch coast.
