Maersk Oil Gryphon FPSO - The Recovery Story

In February 2011, Maersk Oil’s Gryphon FPSO suffered significant damage in heavy storms in the turbulent North Sea. After nearly 20 years of uninterrupted service, the FPSO had to leave the Gryphon field for the first time for repairs and upgrade.

Last Wednesday, May 29, Maersk Oil announced that the FPSO was back in production following a major overhaul of the vessel.

The Gryphon FPSO, located 175 miles north east of Aberdeen, sustained damage in a storm on 4 February 2011 when four anchor chains broke and the vessel moved off station. This caused considerable damage to the subsea architecture requiring the Gryphon FPSO to be towed and dry docked in Damen shipyard in Rotterdam for repairs and upgrades.

The Recovery Story, published by Maersk on their YouTube channel, documents how the FPSO and Gryphon field were brought back to life.
