River cruise company Viking Cruises has christened its first ocean going cruise ship, the 930-guest Viking Star in Bergen, Norway.

“This month heralds a new chapter for Viking and for ocean cruising as we expand our fleet from the world’s rivers to the world’s seas,” Viking Cruises said in a statement announcing the christening ceremony on May 17th.

The ship was christened by Bergen Mayor Trude Drevland in a ceremony that coincided with the celebration of Norway’s National Constitution Day.

Viking Star, which debuted in April this year, is the first of three ocean-going ships ordered by Viking Cruises. The remaining two ships are expected to join the company’s fleet in 2017.

The ship, which is currently sailing the Baltic and Mediterranean, will be operated by Viking’s ocean division, named Viking Ocean Cruises.
