Tanker Catches On Fire off Kandla Port

A major fire broke out on board the 46,145 dwt tanker Genessa in the evening hours of January 17 off the coast of Kandla, India.

At the time of the incident, the ship was at anchor some 14 nautical miles off Deendayal Port Kandla. It was reportedly loaded with 30,000 tonnes of high speed diesel.

Indian Coast Guard officials evacuated 26 seafarers who were aboard the tanker and transferred two crew to a hospital in Mundra to be treated for major burns.

As of January 18, the hot spots temperature was brought down to 40 and 25 degree Celsius on the ship’s port and starboard side, respectively.

A total of 11 tugs were deployed to undertake fire fighting operations.

The fire allegedly started in the crew compartment.
