Report: Arrest Warrants Requested After Explosion at STX Yard in August

Arrest warrants have been demanded for five people related to the explosion at the South Korean STX Offshore & Shipbuilding yard earlier this year, Yonhap News Agency reported.

The explosion, which occurred on an oil tanker under construction in Changwon on August 20, resulted in deaths of four workers. At the time, the workers, in their 30s to 50s, were conducting painting operations inside the tanker at the plant which is located some 450km away from Seoul.

As informed, arrest warrants have been sought for four STX workers and the chief of an unnamed partner company.

The four workers at the yard were charged with failing to ensure appropriate safety measures, while the partner company head with forging employment documents for the four victims.

According to Yonhap, investigations showed that the incident occurred after “flammable gas from the spray paint flew into a lamp lacking explosion-proof measures.”
