Asian cruise line Dream Cruises has christened its new ship, Genting Dream, in Hong Kong.

Designed for the rapidly growing Chinese market, the Genting Dream is the first of two cruise vessels being built for Dream Cruises, part of Genting Hong Kong.

Genting Dream’s arrival marked the first time a luxury cruise ship of this scale has home-ported in Guangzhou, Dream Cruises said.

“As the first-ever Asian luxury cruise line and the first luxury ship to make Guangzhou (Nansha) its home port, year-round, we are devoted to helping advance the cruise market in Southern China,” Thatcher Brown, President of Dream Cruises, said.

Delivered to the company from German shipbuilder Meyer Werft on October 12, 2016, the Genting Dream can accommodate 3,400 passengers and 2,000 crew.

“Our story here actually began in November 2015 when we chose Guangzhou (Nansha) to announce our new Dream Cruises brand. In a scant year’s time, and coupled with the recent homeport of SuperStar Virgo, we have seen passenger numbers grow to over 300,000 resulting in Guangzhou (Nansha) becoming one of the top 3 ports in China today,” Brown added.

Genting Dream’s sister ship, the World Dream, is scheduled for delivery in late 2017.
