Two Containerships Ablaze in Port Klang

A fire broke out  on Tuesday night in Port Klang, Malaysia after two containerships brushed against each other in wharf.

The two boxships  involved in the accident are San Felipe managed by Ship Finance International (SFI) and United Arab Shipping Co’s (UASC) Al Riffa.

Al Riffa had to be towed 1km away from the wharf as the intensity of the fire posed safety risks, the Star Online cited Port Klang Fire and Rescue Services Department spokesman as saying.

The spokesman added that the fire on board the other vessel, San Felipe, was manageable and quickly extinguished without having to move it.

No injuries have been reported. The extend of damages caused by the fire and the cause of the incident are yet to be determined.

“Following an incident involving 2 vessels near the South Channel, the Port Klang Authority has decided to temporarily close the South Channel for a few hours,” the Northport Malaysia BHD said.

The Port Klang Authority (PKA) has lifted the closure of the South Channel and all restrictions from 10.00 a.m local time. According to Northport, all vessel movements have resumed as normal.
