Siport21 to Offer Maritime Resource Management Courses

Siport21 Training Center has joined to centers group with a license of The Swedish Club Academy for giving Maritime Resource Management (MRM) Courses.

With this action, the Training Center, established in Madrid, has met the requirements of the demand from their clients for the development of these training programs. The aim of this course is to minimize the risk of incidents by encouraging safe and responsible behavior. The course meets the requirements laid down in the IMO International Convention on Standards of Training Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCWS), celebrated in 1978.

The courses, which will begin in January 2014, foster positive attitudes favoring good personal communication, excellence in leadership skills and compliance with operation procedures. The course content includes subjects such as: situation awareness; attitudes and management skills; cultural awareness; communication and briefings; challenge and response; short term strategy; authority and assertiveness; management styles; workload; state of the ship; human involvement in error; judgment and decision making; leadership in emergencies; crisis and crowd management and automation awareness, among others.

The methodology of the training program takes place in workshops, conducted by Workshop Leaders at Siport21 approved by The Swedish Club Academy, where the trainees work together in groups and bring up solutions to different cases based on real incidents. MRM course is intended for all captains, deck and engineer officers, pilots and personnel working on companies or institutions related to maritime world.

Thus, in recent years the Siport21 Simulation Center has hosted hundreds of seafarers, including Captains, Officers, Pilots and Harbour Masters that have carried out numerous training courses. Over the past six years there have been more than 90 Training Programs for 30 shipping companies, among others: BP Shipping, Shell, Knutsen OAS Spain, Elcano, Teekay, Golar, Höegh, NYK, MOL, etc. These involved almost 300 Captains and Officers from multiple countries (Russia, UK, Croatia, Belgium, Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, etc.).
