Under RS Survey STX Lays Keel for Second SCF's LNG Carrier (South Korea)

Under RS survey in the Republic of Korea at STX Offshore and Shipbuilding yard a keel of a new large-capacity gas carrier (constr. № S1911) for LNG transportation in low temperature conditions has been laid down.

The ship is being constructed against the order of Sovcomflot for Gazprom Global LNG for the dual class of Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RS) and Lloyd’s Register. RS class notation: KM (*)Ice2 AUT1 OMBO EPP ANTI-ICE LI CCO ECO-S WINTERIZATION(-30) Gas carrier type 2G (methane). The launching of a new gas carrier is scheduled for the end of April, 2013.

The ship is the second in a series of four LNG carriers with membrane-type cargo tanks of capacity approx. 170,000 cu. m., being built at STX Offshore & Shipbuilding Co., Ltd in Korea under RS survey. Launching of the prototype ship of the series – «VELIKIY NOVGOROD» was held on January 15, 2013.

The design of the series provides equipment of the ships with a tri-fuel diesel-electric propulsion plant that allows to use LNG as fuel, thus enabling to reduce the level of NOx and SOx emissions into the air.

The most advanced high-tech shipbuilding projects is the priority area of activities of Russian Mari-time Register of Shipping. As a global leader in the area of classification and survey of ice class ships (about 3350 ice class ships are in RS class including 32 icebreakers), currently RS is strengthening its position in survey for LNG transportation in ice conditions segment. For these purposes in March 2012 RS opened the Design and Newbuilding Support Centre in the Republic of Korea (Busan). Technical support for the design and construction of ships of the series is the first project of the new Center.
