Thoma-Sea Floats Out TAI Designed PSV

Thoma-Sea Shipbuilders recently launched an advanced PSV of Technology EnviroMax 300 design named Taylor James. The vessel, built for Gulf Offshore Logistics, was designed jointly by Technology Associates, Inc. (TAI) and Thoma-Sea Marine.

A particular innovation of the new design is the use of a proprietary Thoma-Sea structural method, employing “minimal welding bulk-head” which makes for easier construction and maintenance and results in a higher strength to weight ratio. Another innovative feature of the design (developed by TAI) is the use of the cargo rails for tank venting and elevated spill containment. This arrangement reduces the clutter of tank vents, spill containments, load & discharge manifolds outside the cargo rails which normally create an obstruction for the movement of the crew around the deck.

Refinement of hull lines including an advanced bulbous bow is designed to achieve a reduction in wave resistance of 30% resulting in more speed with lower engine output from the 2 Rolls Royce Azimuth thrusters which are driven by 2,200 kW electric motors.

The EnviroMax 300 vessel can carry in excess of 18,000 bbls of liquid mud, structure is designed for mud density of 2.4 SG, over 11,000 Cu ft of Bulk Mud, over 1,800 BBLS of Methanol, 650,000 gals of drill water, 68,000 gals of potable water, 270,000 gals of fuel and in excess of 3400 tons of deck cargo. The target deadweight of the vessel is in excess of 5,700 short tons.
