Havyard Group to Construct Fosnavaag Shipping`s New Wellboat (Norway)

Havyard Group is going to construct Fosnavaag Shipping`s new wellboat, with an option for a further delivery. The wellboat is characterized as the world`s most efficient and eco-friendly.

Last month, the Herøy-based shipping company signed a contract with Havyard Group AS for delivery of a Havyard 587 design with the option for one further delivery. It was not made public then what shipyard was going to construct this new vessel, but it is Havyard and their own shipyard, Havyard Ship Technology in Leirvik, who will construct the wellboat. Delivery of the first ship is due in January 2014 with the option for delivery of a similar ship six months later. Each wellboat has an estimated value of NOK 250 million.

Havyard 587 has three large cylinder tanks for live fish with a capacity of 3250 cubic. The wellboat is nearly 85 metres long and has accommodation for 12 persons.

ENVIRONMENTAL SUCCESS

According to designer Kjetil Myren of Havyard Design & Engineering (HDE), the Havyard 587 will have the ultimate equipment within wellboat technology onboard, setting a whole new standard for environmental and gentle transport and excellent treatment of live fish.

– The cylindrical cargo tanks and the efficient filter- and water treatment equipment make it possible to succeed with sealed transport across longer distances compared to existing boats. The tanks can also serve and hold an increased fish density within. Hull lines and propulsion machinery, a medium-sized main engine with considerably reduced fuel consumption compared to a high-speed engine, are all designed for a high top speed and fuel economic average speed, says Myren, who adds that a catalytic converter has also been installed onboard. The wellboat will do a maximum speed of 14 knots fully loaded, and emission per kilogram of carried fish is extremely low.

– In order to prevent emissions and to minimize risk of contamination, all water is going to be UV-treated and to go through a complicated two-step filter system. The wellboat will be outfitted with a system for delousing all fish onboard and the filter system will remove and destroy all lice from salmon. These systems result in an extremely low mortality rate of fish during freight, informs CEO Olav Remøy of Fosnavaag Shipping, who as a result of all these advantages, concludes that Havyard 587 is the world`s most eco-friendly wellboat.

INSPIRING CONFIDENCE

Fosnavaag Shipping already owns “Viktoria Viking” (1000 m3), “Viktoria Lady” (1000 m3) and “Gripfisk” (600 m3), in addition to the prawn trawler “Remøy”, as well as the coastguard vessel “KV Aalesund”. The company that was founded in 2006 has 70 employees, four of these working in the administration.

CEO Olav Remøy of Fosnavaag Shipping is pleased with the fact they have reached a shipyard agreement.

– We have been in touch with a number of shipyards, both in Norway and abroad, but we ended up choosing Havyard because it is a safe and sensible choice both in terms of quality and delivery time. Through the good cooperation we have had with Havyard Design & Engineering, we now know the company and all of its organization well. What we have seen and experienced inspires confidence, says Remøy.
