Mazagon Dock Delivers Third Shivalik Class Frigate to Indian Navy

 

Mazagon Dock Limited, India’s premier warship constructor, delivered the third Shivalik Class Stealth Frigate “Sahyadri” to the Indian Navy.

Acceptance documents for the Yard-12637 were exchanged between Rear Admiral R K Shrawat, CMD, MDL and Rear Admiral S P Lal, CSO (Tech), HQWNC on 25 June 2012 in the presence of Commander P R Raghunath, Director (Shipbuilding) and Commodore A K Saxena, Warship Production Superintendent (Mumbai).

Sahyadri is the third and last of the ships under Project-17. She is likely to be commissioned into the fleet by the third week of July, 2012. The 143 meter-long warship with 6,000 tonnes displacement, has versatile control systems with signature management including radar cross-section reduction features.

Project-17 consists of three ships of Shivalik class stealth frigates designed by the Indian Navy’s Design Organisation – Directorate of Naval Design (DND) and built by Mazagon Dock Limited. The ships are named after mountain ranges of the Indian sub-continent, “Shivalik”, “Satpura” and “Sahyadri”. The construction of first ship “Shivalik” commenced in Dec 2000. The ship was delivered on 30 Mar 10 and commissioned on 29 Apr 10. The second ship “Satpura” was delivered on 09 Jul 11 and commissioned on 20 Aug 11.

The Shivalik Class frigates will be followed by the P-15A class destroyers, now under outfitting at MDL.
