Germany: Fassmer Shipyard Inks Research Vessel Construction and Delivery Contract

Fassmer Shipyard Inks Research Vessel Construction and Delivery Contract

Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) recently signed a contract with Fassmer shipyard for construction and delivery of a 21m research vessel. With this order, the series of research vessels being built at Fassmer will be completed. The series comprises the 65-meter Fugro Galaxy and Fugro Searcher, 28-meter fishing research vessel Clupea and further 40-meter research vessel currently being constructed.

The 21m research vessel is designed to perform scientific tasks in the Wadden Sea to the east of Sylt and Rom and to safely operate in the waters west of Sylt and Helgoland.

This vessel type features a robust, flat-bottomed displacement hull. An open working deck addition to a winch and crane research and a rear-A-Boom are installed behind the superstructure. An air-conditioned, combined dry and wet laboratory with suitable equipment is located below deck in the bow.

The research vessel is built according to regulations of Germanischer Lloyd and the BG traffic. In addition to the class notation, Environmental Passport (Green Passport) gets this new environmental label “Blue Angel Ship Design” for seagoing vessels. These eco-labels are already realized in the design and construction of the vessel’s many innovations to protect the environment.

Fassmer has been collecting experience in the design and fabrication of environmentally friendly vessels through the production of a Greenpeace sailing vessel “Rainbow Warrior”.
