Italian cabling giant Prysmian has signed a long-term agreement for the supply of copper wire rod with Germany's Aurubis, building on a partnership that spans over 30 years.
In its announcement, Aurubis said that it currently produces copper wire rod with approximately 36% recycled material content and a carbon footprint significantly below the global industry average, in addition to its four copper rod plants across Europe providing Prysmian with flexibility and proximity to key markets.
This latest deal represents the largest contract signed between the two companies.
Alberto Boffelli, Chief Operating Officer at Prysmian, said: “As the world’s largest buyer of copper wire rod, Prysmian has both an opportunity and a responsibility to help shape the future of the copper value chain. This agreement with Aurubis gives us the reliable, flexible and increasingly sustainable supply our customers need, while strengthening Europe’s access to a material that is critical to its energy and digital future.”
Both companies are part of The Copper Mark, where all Aurubis rod mills have been awarded the independent assurance framework for responsible copper production, sourcing and recycling, the Hamburg-based firm reported.
“Together, our four rod plants in Europe, our strong sustainability performance – in line with our Tomorrow Metals promise – and our long-standing partnership with key customers such as Prysmian demonstrate how resilient European value chains can create value and support the continent’s industrial competitiveness,” said Martin Sjoberg, SVP Commercial at Aurubis.
