U.S. offshore engineering and construction player McDermott has won an engineering, procurement, construction, and installation (EPCI) assignment for a gas development project off the coast of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), enabling it to deliver one of the Middle East’s heaviest offshore topsides.
McDermott has been awarded an EPCI contract, worth more than $1 billion, by ADNOC for Package 4 of the Umm Shaif Integrated Gas Cap and Surface Pressure Boosting (SPB) project , which is a critical component of the Umm Shaif Long Term Development Plan (LTDP), designed to maximize gas recovery from the field and increase gas production. This award comes shortly after the project’s $6.2 billion (AED22.6 billion) final investment decision (FID) was announced.
The U.S. player and its Qingdao McDermott Wuchuan (QMW) consortium will provide the complete EPCI scope for a new surface pressure boosting facility, including construction and installation of a jacket and topside, as well as associated brownfield modifications. Upon completion, the topside is expected to rank among the heaviest offshore modules ever installed in the Middle East.

While engineering and project management activities will be led from McDermott’s offices in the United Arab Emirates, fabrication will be carried out at QMW, the firm’s joint venture fabrication yard in Qingdao, China.

This development in the Umm Shaif and Nasr offshore concession, which will unlock more than 600 million standard cubic feet per day (scfd) of natural gas and associated gas liquids, is operated by ADNOC Offshore (60%), with TotalEnergies (20%), CNPC (10%), and Eni (10%) as partners.
The EPCI job with ADNOC comes two months after McDermott secured a place among contractors Saudi Arabia’s Aramco picked for a project management consultancy (PMC) long-term agreement (LTA) to support delivery of large-scale energy, downstream, petrochemical, and low-carbon projects.
