Marine robotics company Ocean Infinity is set to begin a geotechnical survey later this month for Eastern Green Link (EGL5), the UK’s fifth subsea electricity superhighway that would connect Scotland and England.
The marine survey activities for the 2 GW EGL5 are expected to commence on November 23 in English waters, working north, and are expected to be completed by the end of February 2026.
Ocean Infinity will perform the work using the survey vessel A7803 .
SSEN Transmission and National Grid Electricity Transmission (NGET) are working together to address the need for increased capacity within the transmission network between Scotland and England.
The EGL links form part of planned electricity grid reinforcements to boost the capability of the existing UK transmission network and facilitate increased flows of planned renewable generation in the North to demand centers to the South, supporting the ambition of enabling 50 GW of offshore wind generation by 2030 and achieving a net-zero economy by 2050.
EGL5 will consist of a high-voltage direct current (HVDC) cable connection between Aberdeenshire and Lincolnshire. The project, part of The Great Grid Upgrade , would transport enough clean energy from Scotland to power up to two million homes in parts of the Midlands and South of England.
In terms of other news, Eastern Green Link 3 (EGL3) is currently carrying out a UXO marine geophysical survey near Sandford Bay using the vessel Spectrum 1. The marine survey activities are expected to be completed around the end of December.
