German energy company Uniper has selected Swedish eFuel company Liquid Wind to develop its sustainable electrofuel project NorthStarH2, which aims to produce eMethanol for the shipping and chemical industries, in Östersund, Sweden.
Uniper’s NorthStarH2 plant will convert biogenic carbon dioxide and renewable electricity to produce over 100,000 tons of eMethanol and Liquid Wind has been chosen to develop the project by applying standardized design and digital platform that enables efficient replication to replace fossil fuels and feedstock.
The German company has already signed an agreement with Swedish power company Jämtkraft to secure access to land and electricity grid connections for this project.

The latest collaboration follows a strategic partnership agreement signed by Uniper and Liquid Wind earlier this year to boost eFuel facilities’ development for fossil-free eMethanol production.
The companies agreed to combine their competencies to drive commercial-scale development of eFuel facilities while reducing costs and risks and developing the supply chain.
Specifically, they plan to conduct and evaluate opportunities for collaboration in facility development, power supply, and offtake of eMethanol, complementing Liquid Wind’s ongoing development business.
