Lithuanian and Dutch energy companies discussed avenues for cooperation in the areas of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and renewable energy during an energy forum in the Baltic state.

The company names included the Hague-based LNG giant Shell and companies such as Gasunie, Nuon Vattenfall, as well as Lithuania’s Klaipedos Nafta, Lietuvos Energija, Litgrid, BaltPool and Achema.

The Netherlands that has developed a strong sector of LNG aims to promote the use of LNG for transport, industrial and household needs in Europe. Dutch companies see the Lithuanian LNG terminal as a gateway to the entire Baltic Sea region, a statement from Lithuanian president, Dalia Grybauskaitė ‘s office reads.

Shell, which has already started the transportation of small LNG cargoes from the Port of Klaipėda to new LNG distribution station tanks, as well as other Dutch companies are interested in closer cooperation with Lithuania.

Last year, in cooperation with Dutch companies, gas was reloaded from the floating LNG terminal “Independence” to a smaller vessel for the first time.

Also during the forum, the universities of Klaipėda, Groningen and Eindhoven signed a memorandum of understanding on cooperation in the development of environmentally friendly and smart LNG technologies.
