GeoSea’s heavy-lift jack-up Innovation installed the 49th and final monopile on Vattenfall’s Horns Rev 3 offshore wind farm in the Danish North Sea just after the New Year.

The Innovation started installing the monopiles on the site north-west of Blåvands Huk on the Danish west coast in mid-October. The construction process on the 406.7MW wind farm, the largest in Danish waters, is on schedule, Vattenfall said.

The next step, which will commence by the end of spring, will be to install the transition pieces between the foundation and the turbine tower. After this, the installation of the towers can begin, followed by the installation of the MHI Vestas 8.3MW wind turbines.

“The installation of the last foundation marks an important milestone for the project. And while the weather gods have not always favoured us, the installation and transportation of foundations have been without major challenges and not one single accident, ” said Martin Zappe , Project Director for Horns Rev 3.

“The construction process is progressing as planned, which we are of course pleased with. This is due to a professional project team and good cooperation with our partners.”

The wind farm is expected to be in full operation by 2020.

In addition to Horns Rev 3, Vattenfall will over the coming years develop three more projects in Danish waters: Kriegers Flak, Vesterhav Syd and Vesterhav Nord .
