Georgia Governor Nathan Deal yesterday announced the transfer of $4 million from the Governor’s Emergency Fund to the Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency to fund critical and urgent restoration needs on Jekyll Island.

“ Due to Hurricanes Matthew and Irma, there is an immediate need for the rehabilitation of the rock revetment and restoration of armament on the north portion of Jekyll Island ,” said Governor Deal.

“I’ve allocated $4 million to cover these immediate needs and will seek supplemental funding in the amended budget to assist other beachfront areas impacted by hurricane-related erosion.”

Jones Hooks, executive director of the Jekyll Island Authority, said that the money will go toward repairing dunes washed away by storm surge as well as improving shoreline rock fortifications built to protect against erosion.

Hooks also said that engineers estimate Jekyll Island’s beach needs $9.5 million worth of work overall.
