Quoceant has released a video showcasing its novel wave energy technology that can change its volume on command to absorb more power, or protect itself against the storms.

The technology, dubbed Ectacti-Hull, is intended to break the fundamental conflict between performance and survivability of wave energy devices by introducing the ability to substantially change the machine hull volume on command.

Edinburgh-based wave energy developer, Quoceant, has recently concluded the stage 1 testing of the Ectacti-Hull technology for Wave Energy Scotland project, showing that the reduced motion of the low volume (deflated) configuration compared to the high volume (inflated) configuration is stark.

The deflated configuration of the technology can be used for survivability during storms, while the inflated configuration is suitable for absorbing more power.

Results from the tests indicate that the joint specifications (angle and moment) required for power capture in moderate seas are not dissimilar to those required for survivability in storm conditions, Quoceant said.

The joint design can thus be much more efficient and cost effective, according to Quoceant, which would result in providing a step-change in cost of energy.

The testing of the technology was conducted at FloWave using a line-absorber type of WEC, but Quoceant states the concept is applicable to many other WEC types as well.

Quoceant added that the second stage of the technology development program will include impact assessments for WECs of different type than line absorber.
