In just over two months Ballast Nedam Offshore has transported and installed 39 monopiles for the offshore wind farm Baltic 2. This was achieved despite the occurrence of two of the worst storms in a decade in October and November.
Among the monopiles installed, were the largest monopiles used in offshore wind energy so far (930 tons).
The last monopile at the offshore wind farm Baltic 2 in the Baltic Sea in Germany was installed on 13 December 2013. Ballast Nedam installed the monopiles at EnBW’s offshore wind farm for the joint venture of Hochtief and Geosea. Baltic 2 consists of 39 monopiles and 41 jackets for 80 Siemens 3.6 MW wind turbines.
Ballast Nedam applied its feeding principle, transporting the monopiles floating from EEW’s fabrication yard in Rostock to the offshore site. This successful principle has been performed for over 300 foundations in offshore wind farms throughout Europe and has proven to be a fast and reliable way of transporting monopiles. At the offshore site the monopiles were upended and installed by Ballast Nedam’s heavy lift vessel Svanen.
The HLV Svanen has installed almost 400 foundations for offshore wind farms in the United Kingdom, Belgium, The Netherlands, Denmark and Germany.
