As it completes 23 years of existence on Saturday (May 26), Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JN Port) is entering an exciting new phase of development.

Despite the project delays due to policymaking constraints and the other impediments that have been impacting the facility, 2011-12 was yet another year of great records for JN Port, according to eximin.net.

Under the leadership of the Chairman, Mr L. Radhakrishnan, and Deputy Chairman, Mr N. N. Kumar, a number of ambitious projects have been formulated. The Port currently has nine projects at various stages of implementation. While consultants are preparing the design/feasibility report for some, others are on the verge of commencement of construction or award.

This is a giant leap considering that not many cargo handling projects have come up at the Port since its inception, the main exceptions being the private terminals.

The second phase of dredging up to 17 metres, fifth container terminal, Port-based SEZ, logistics park, and even bulk, break-bulk/project and coastal cargo handling facilities (as part of the move towards emerging as a multipurpose port) are some of the key projects proposed over a period of more than a decade.
