C-NLOPB, the regulatory agency for the Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Area received notification from Suncor Energy that a helicopter owned by Cougar that was en route to the Terra Nova FPSO returned to base and landed safely at approximately 8:10 a.m., January 11, 2012.

The helicopter was some 20 miles out from St. John’s when an intermittent ‘Engine Fire’ indicator light came on. There was no fire and no secondary indicator light. The flight turned around as a precautionary measure and landed safely in St. John’s wherein passengers were briefed. Cougar has examined the aircraft and determined that it was an indication only and is in the process of replacing the fire detection sensor.

Cougar Helicopters commenced operations in Newfoundland in June 1997 with its first offshore flight to the Hibernia Platform. Cougar’s primary role is the transfer of personnel to and from their offshore location. The company also has a secondary role in providing Search and Rescue services to offshore operators. From its base in Newfoundland Cougar operates a fleet of four Sikorsky S-92 aircraft.
